Release Date April 10, 2006
Martin Hannett obviously ranks as one of the great British producers of the last few decades, belonging alongside such luminaries as Mike Hedges, John Leckie, Trevor Horn, Stephen Street, Grant Showbiz & Ed Buller. The producer's role in the scheme of things is often forgotten - though of course the late Hannett has been nailed to the mythology surrounding Joy Division and their doomed poet/singer Ian Curtis. Hannett was memorably played by Gollum from Lord of the Rings in Michael Winterbottom's '24 Hour Party People'- a film that's great entertainment but quite irritating (I'm sure Hannett would have loved the fact they used the work he produced in the studio as the tracks the fictional JD played!). There's another JD-biopic around the ... Read More:

I can't believe the reviewer (Debbie) who says she didn't know most of these tracks! If she was there in the 1980s, she must have had ear plugs in and a paper bag over her head! This album is a great compilation at a bargain price - fantastic for listening to in the car, or quizzing your mates (who was that?), or demonstrating your vast knowledge of 1980s pop trivia. For the discerning listener, this series of albums prompts wider research into some of these artists - the excellent Blancmange, for example, and whatever happened to Kon Kan?
At less than £1 per disc, this is amazing value. For those who weren't there it provides a pretty good overview of what was happening in that decade.

This is a surprising collection in that with most rock collections you get the usual songs but with this collection the tracklist is surprising and very varied and rather than rely on the standard rock song's (Ace Of Spades, All Right Now and so on) this offers an array of bands from Glam (The Sweet), Classic Rock (ZZ Top, Alice Cooper), Metal (Judas Priest, Pantera) Alt-Rock (Screaming Trees), Grunge (Alice In Chains).
Add to that the fact that you may own some of these songs (as I do) I was quite surprised to find the bulk of this collection was new to me. Add to that the fact that it is 100 songs over five discs at such a great price and you can't go wrong.

I bought this thinking that the tracks would be those performed by the artists on the Tube. WRONG! The tracks are from the respective artists' studio albums. Shame they don't state that on the Amazon listing, eh?

Release Date November 27, 2006
There are some decent tracks on here buried amongst the oft-repeated tat selection also included. My main complaint is that this selection has absolutely nothing to do with 'New Wave' post punk. If you want to find an excellent compilation of 'new wave' bands see if you can dig out the now deleted 'Once in a lifetime' double disc set.
Why record companies want to put out such a selection of this, which just throws in all types of odds and sods from the 80's with no real focus, is beyond me really......
