This MATILDE DI SHABRAN (Pesaro 2004) being my 38th Rossini opera on disc (only RICCIARDO & ZORAIDE is missing!), I can't recommend it highly enough, not least to rare opera hunters. Hearing the set over and over again for more than a week now, I purchased it primarily for Massis, whose unforgettable Countess Adele I saw three times in Glyndebourne's LE COMTE ORY 10 years ago and still enjoy endlessly on DVD. She and Florez (my first disc of either artist) nail their fiendish notes disarmingly, as if they're doing nothing less than breathing like the rest of mankind, though many times you'd wonder if they breathe at all! This recording of Carmina Burana by the Berlin Symphony Orchestra is probably one of the best ever made. I have had the chance to listen to several other recordings, but for me this remains the best one. Carmina Burana is quite difficult to interpret and conduct, and this performance is neither too fast, nor too slow. It is just dynamic enough to express the passion for love and nature. I would point on Sylvia Greenberg's superb performance in the sopran.
A professional performance for the most demanding listeners.

This recording of Carmina Burana by the Berlin Symphony Orchestra is probably one of the best ever made. I have had the chance to listen to several other recordings, but for me this remains the best one. Carmina Burana is quite difficult to interpret and conduct, and this performance is neither too fast, nor too slow. It is just dynamic enough to express the passion for love and nature. I would point on Sylvia Greenberg's superb performance in the sopran.

A lot of people might think "Wow, that's expensive!", but it's one man's entire life's work. This a collection of the greatest known music ever composed in the history of the world and is an utter bargain. Philips have done a superb job of compiling up the works and there isn't a single dud performance in the whole set. Stop buying individual CDs and bitty-piecey collections, do yourself a favour and buy the whole lot - it's cheaper in the long run.

The solo pieces, the orchestral pieces, and the choral pieces are all performed excellently, whether by famous players and conductors or by lesser knowns. It may be true that there may be better renditions around of some pieces, but I don't think you'll be disappointed with what is here.

carl orff's carmina burana remains one of my all time favourite pieces of classical music, drawing on many different styles including opera, classic, romantic, baroque (and i always think of spanish folk music in some of the later movements). this recording if anything emphasises its power, emotion and Orff's skill at building up anticipation and tension by use of many different textures of music.
the voices are awesome, in paricular the tenor ( who wails comically and operatically in <>), though the boy's chorus also adds enrichment. others have commented on minor nuances in the recording. i appreciate that they are there, but to take them away or digitally edit them would be to somehow alter the thick atmosphere that ... Superb! The music is crystal clear and supports the choir perfectly - rather than being overwhelmed with 'noise' you can hear individual instruments and the timing of the conducting is spot on! The songs blend together seamlessly and you are transported on a beautiful journey of emotions through the story. Ideal for listening anytime and always guaranteed to lift your mood and make your spirits soar. A plus point is that you can switch off at any time and still feel that 15 minutes listening to this is as worthwhile as listening to the whole thing. Definately a five star CD. Enjoy!
