As the title indicates, this is the music played in the rougher watering holes of black America in the immediate postwar period, coinciding with the increasingly wide availability of electric guitars. Though these recordings were, presumably, mostly made in premises at least vaguely resembling recording studios, they sound completely live, warts and all. It seems unlikely that many of these artists achieved any fame beyond a fairly small number of these jook joints, or that any of these records sold in significant numbers, and in many cases this is understandable - there is virtually no artist represented in this box set with a tenth of the talent of Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker or Lightnin' Hopkins. That said, there is much to enjoy here, ... Read More:

This is one impresssive box set, four discs and an excellent 64-page booklet.
"Chess Rhythm & Roll" brings together excactly 99 Chess singles recorded between 1947 and 1967, and while Chess records is better known as the home of men like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, the Chess brothers also had many of the earliest (and best) rock n' rollers in their stable. This is rock n' roll, R&B, pop, and a bit of soul, doo-wop and blues as well, and this lavish collection far exceeds your average "oldies" package.
The sound is every bit as good as you can expect from material dating back to the 40s and 50s. Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley are here, of course, two of the label's biggest stars, but it's the attention given to lesser-known ... Read More:

Extravagent? Yes of course! Worth it? Undoubtedly!
For almost 30 years some of the best black music appeared on the Chess label (yes, I have heard of Motown, Atlantic and Stax). This sumptuous box set captures the full range of the Chess catalogue: from the raw Chicago blues sound of Muddy Waters (an astonishing 31 tracks), Howling Wolf and John Lee Hooker; through the more playful RnB of the likes of Chuck Berry (19 tracks) and Bo Diddley (15 tracks); to the soulful sound of artists like Fontella Bass, Etta James and Little Milton.
Of course many of the tracks are very familiar but there is plenty of rare stuff to stumble across that you either never knew or had forgotten. Particular favourites of mine so far have been "Try ... Read More:
