Um, my wife bought me this, the Edge Of The 70's and the Mix Tape one for our wedding anniversary this week, mainly due to being of a certain age, I guess, oh and having a massive obscure 80's music collection - I've been collecting since 1978 when I was 12.
I must say a lot of the tracks on this CD are hardly "on the edge" - Tears For Fears? Visage? Landscape? The Cure? Ultravox's "Vienna"? However, there are some surprising cuts on here. It's nice to see that B-Movie finally get on one of these complilations, hopefully Steve Hovington and the boys can finally make a bit of money. They were one of the truly great "undiscovered" bands of the new romantic era. That's the thing with the 80's for every Thompson Twins, Duran ... Read More:

What sets this extensive triple disc set apart from most 80's compilations is that we are spared some of the ubiquitous songs that appear on virtually every compilation from that decade. As the title implies the emphasis here is on electric/ New Romantic music which people believe dominated that decade. Well just as punk didn't actually dominate the charts in 76/77 nor did rock n roll rule the charts in the late 50's, this kind of music wasn't actually all over the charts in the 80's. Many of these tracks are quite obscure, or are by one hit wonders, and none of the tracks are later than 1986; whereas several actually date from 1979, so it was strictly a first half of the 80's style anyway. Of course there are some of the era's big ... Read More:

There are some decent tracks on here buried amongst the oft-repeated tat selection also included. My main complaint is that this selection has absolutely nothing to do with 'New Wave' post punk. If you want to find an excellent compilation of 'new wave' bands see if you can dig out the now deleted 'Once in a lifetime' double disc set.
Why record companies want to put out such a selection of this, which just throws in all types of odds and sods from the 80's with no real focus, is beyond me really......

I can't believe the reviewer (Debbie) who says she didn't know most of these tracks! If she was there in the 1980s, she must have had ear plugs in and a paper bag over her head! This album is a great compilation at a bargain price - fantastic for listening to in the car, or quizzing your mates (who was that?), or demonstrating your vast knowledge of 1980s pop trivia. For the discerning listener, this series of albums prompts wider research into some of these artists - the excellent Blancmange, for example, and whatever happened to Kon Kan?
At less than £1 per disc, this is amazing value. For those who weren't there it provides a pretty good overview of what was happening in that decade.

The series of 12" 80's era CD box sets highlight just what a rich tapestry of output this period had, and reading through the reviews, also how opinions divide so much over track listings.
Dealing with the track listing issue, I won't be doing a track by track analysis as others have already done so (no point in repeating others work), and I reckon if you are looking at the items page, the track listing, and my review, you will already know if this album is what you want, and if you know or like the tracks or not.
The albums in the 12" series seem to average between 30-40 tracks, so back in the day (let alone now at collectors' fairs) to buy all of the tracks included would cost at least a £120 or more. You can now ... Read More:

Whoever at Universal/Polygram devised this should be knighted! This double CD, and the accompanying "Volume 2" set, is a wholly enyoyable experience and great fun for anybody who grew up in the 1980s (as I did) or maybe for younger people too young to remember the 80s but who are sick of the current Top 40. The songs on these CDs are mixed into each other (as a club DJ would do) and some of the song selections, especially some of less obvious choices (Gary Numan's "We Are Glass" being a prime example) are inspired. Thankfully we are also spared the really naff 80s music which gives the decade it's currently unfashionable "naff" reputation..... Instead we get quality 80s music from the likes of Heaven 17, OMD, ... Read More:
