Secrets is Allison Crowe's first full length release, having only released two EPs (6 Songs and Tidings) prior to Secrets. Where as the EPs featured her band, Secrets is mostly a solo affair on piano. This change means that the album's sound is best described as folk rather than the jazz/folk/rock fusion which musically characterised her previous outings. The most important element remains and that is her emotive voice, her intimate lyrics and the ability to weave in covers of other artists' songs in a seamless and convincing manner.
Secrets is no exception to this and the covers of Counting Crows' "Raining in Baltimore" and Lenord Cohen's "Joan of Arc" are sublime. However, as good these covers are they pale into comparison to ... Read More:

I bought this after hearing an acquaintance playing it. There is not a bad track on this album. Each one is sheer, haunting, lasting quality with an incredible and unique vocal style. I probably listen to it once a week. Despite having all the other albums, all of which have their own strengths and merits, I keep coming back to this one and find something new in each listen. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Ok this is repackaging of an earlier cd,but if you are a Crows fan then just to hear an incredible live version of "Time and Time Again" is well worth the outlay.

i love counting crows, especially the first and second albums. there's a raw, honest emotion to them that seems to have left the crows' more recent effort, hard candy. the disillusion i felt with the band's latest work left me wanting a return to the good old days, so when i discovered this early live album and read the rave reviews on amazon i bought it on spec with great anticipation.
and fair's fair. a lot of work and talent went into this. it is a testament to counting crows that they are able to incorporate so much improvisation into a live show and still stay tight. but i feel that in doing so they have bypassed much of what makes the crows such a hugely listenable band. the massive amount of technically excellent improvised reworking ... as a huge counting crows fan i was curious about the quality of a 'tribute cd', this however is outstanding. all the songs have a new edge and it has introduced me to many new emo/indie bands whose existance i was unaware of, having only really listened to about 4 of the bands featured previously. highlights include rydia's version of angels of the silences and rocket summer's high life. i have been listening to this cd almost constantly in the 2 days i've had it and would highly recommend it to all c.c fans, or anyone into more emo type indie music. a damn good cd!
