The Very Best of The Pogues

Search: Rainy Night In Soho
by: The Pogues

Release Date March 02, 2001
This album is perfect if you are just discovering the 80's Punk-Folk phenomenon The Pogues. Of all the interesting music prevalent in the 80's (and no, not ANY of it is DISCO thank-you very much), the Pogues had it together. While just as rowdy as the Sex Pistols, the Pogues combined Celtic folk sound with the punk uh, sensibility, best exemplified in the alluringly-titled "Rum, Sodomy and the Lash." If you have no Pogues, this is a great start--lots of the best cuts. Now that there is a sort of World-Celtic-Folk revival going on, this album will surprise your friends with it's raw yet catchy sound.

by: Shane MacGowan and The Popes

Release Date February 25, 2002
Sorry to say this is terrible, the sound is duff, and instead of hearing rock and roll mixed with irish music.
It is totally twiddly diddly twee irish music,it has a lot of the hits but they just sound terrible, really half arsed.

Plus the fact that we all know that Shane's voice isn't wonderful, but dear oh dear it has virtually gone and is a shadow of his fomer self, half his teeth half gone and he just lisps rasps through every song, he should have given up after the Pogues, although that is harsh the first Popes album is good, the first song "that woman's got me drinking", a good rock and roll number, this is just dirge.

If there is little or no Pogues in your collection, and there most certainly should be, this could be a great place to start, as disc one gathers all their most influential material; the singles, key album tracks and even a B-side (The Repeal Of The Licensing Laws), while the soul of the band is laid bare on the second disc, the previously unreleased reunion concert that took place over two legendary nights at the Brixton Academy on the lead up to Christmas 2001, with Shane MacGowan back with the band for nearly all the lead vocals (so far as I can tell Spider Stacy takes the lead on Tuesday Morning, Terry Woods sings Young Ned of The Hill, Phil Chevron sings his own Thousands Are Sailing and Lila MacMahon guests with Shane on a rousing Fairytale Of New ... by: Various Artists

Release Date March 14, 2005
This is only one in a long line of compilations that claim to bring you the best of Irish Folk Music. Just about all of these compilations will bring you some song by authentic folk bands like the Chieftains, yet some or even most songs on these compilations will be from Irish pop artists like The Corrs, Sinead O'Connor and sometimes even U2. With all due respect for these artists, they are pop artists.
This compilation is different. It gives you three CD's with authentic Irish Folk Music, each and every song. There are wonderful jigs and unbelievable vocals to be heard on this compilation. Though there may be some important names missing like the Dubliners, Chieftains and Furey Brothers, this is still the best Irish Folk compilation I've ever come across.

Release Date June 09, 2008
A collection of Trad Arr tunes from Damo here so unfair to compare it to his previous 3 records.

Aided and abetted by John Sheahan and Barney McKenna of Dubliners fame for added authenticity Dempsey does justice and more to a clearly studiously picked selection of Irish songs, the highlights being a sumptuous rendition of The Pogues "Rainy Night In Soho" and a stab at coming-of-age ditty "Schooldays Over" which had all manner of lumps rising in my throat.

Not original material maybe but still vital nonetheless.
