Clubbers Guide Summer 2005

This is pretty much what you'd expect from Ministry - quite a few chart hits, some of which have been around for a while now. There is better music out there, but this is a good bit of summer fun.

Personally, I prefer CD2 to CD1 as it flows better and has more of a trance element. That's probably the worst thing about this release - a lot of people will only like one of the two CDs.

Now this is coming from a long time Kandi Fan...

When I first bought this album I hated it, I played it a couple of times and then consigned it to the bottom of my cd collection, swearing never to buy any more Kandi anymore - Please come back Mr Mark Doyle all is forgiven.

But.........

Fast-forward a couple of months and I dug it out again and gave it another go and now I love it. Can't get enough of it!

Watch out for the last track on side 1 - All This Love - Similou This remix is going to be massive!!! (The original track is rubbish but this remix is something else!)

Fierce Angel: The Collection

Compiled by Mark Doyle: most of the time you know you get a lot of quality. This time you don't. I found it difficult to find 11 tracks out of 33 with really good tracks. Examples are Bonnie Bailey, Hardsoul, Chic (!), Sun and Damien Strong. But 11 good songs out of 33 isn't good enough. I agree with another reviewer on the Fierce Cd's that it's a mistake to go from 2 to 3 cd's. You can't do that if you haven't got enough quality tracks to put on. A positive example of this is the sampler CD A Fierce Angel: this is really good: it's also just 1 cd. You better buy this one.

People who have been listening to any house music for the last 3 years or so will have noticed that whatever it was their favourite DJs were spinning in 2003, most of them are now playing dirty tech house, or minimal techno, or some combination thereof. The closest comparison I can think of is the nu-metal peak, when people from all over the rock spectrum suddenly grew square goatees and dreads and started moaning about their girlfriends.

Of course, dirty house is a little more consistent than the now universally-reviled nu-metal sound, but it does mean that there's a great glut of material, and as such a mix has to be something special to get noticed.
