Handel: Solomon

Search: Rise
by: Nancy Argenta Barbara Hendricks Carolyn Watkinson Anthony Rolfe Johnson The Monteverdi Choir English Baroque Soloists John Eliot Gardiner

Release Date May 15, 2006
Reviewing a PG Rosette recording in detail after more than two decades would be superfluous. This being my first SOLOMON, I confess that I didn't find much of the score entirely memorable at the beginning, but those gems revealed themselves on repeated hearings; however, my all-time favourite Handel oratorio is still THEODORA. Though I can't find fault with its performative and sonic qualities, this classic recording has to lose a star on account of Gardiner's fatal decision to eliminate five arias: in the accompanying booklet, JEG defends sanctioning the cuts, arguing (unconvincingly for me) that they were composed for specific singers (aren't many of those singer requests masterpieces?), and that they hold up the action (if this were the case, ... Tippett: Vocal Music

Search: Rise
by: Various Artists

Release Date November 14, 2005
I have chosen to review this set as it would appear to be the only way now left by which to acquire the sublime Byzantium, as performed by Solti, the Chicago Symphony and the majectic Faye Robinson.

The first disc comprises Tippett songs which I am in no position to comment on as they are some of the few Tippett items I do not own and know. A situation I will most certainly remedy.

The second disc gives us A Child of our Time, probably Tippett's most popular and performed work. Ironically so in my opinion because this is representative of the earliest era of Tippett's career when arguably he had yet to find the utterly distinctive voice and commence the journey to the most refined individuality that would eventually define ...
