The UndertonesSearch: Rock The Casbah by: The Undertones Release Date February 26, 2008 The Sanctuary label have ruined a damn fine album with this re-issue.Why on earth place 'Teenage Kicks' and 'Get Over You' (as brilliant as they are) right in the middle of an album they did not originally appear on?Why remove the album version of 'Here Comes The Summer' and replace it with the inferior single version?Why do we need 12 extra bonus tracks anyway?As a result of this mauling the album sounds fragmented and will disappoint those of us who grew up with,and fondly remember the original record. The track listing on the original album was Family Entertainment/Girls Don't Like It/Male Model/I Gotta Getta/Wrong Way/Jump Boys/Here Comes The Summer/Billy's Third/Jimmy Jimmy/True Confessions/She's A Runaround/I Know A Girl/Listening ... Teenage Kicks: The Best of the Undertones [CASSETTE]Search: Rock The Casbah by: The Undertones Release Date March 10, 1996 While their peers whined self-consciously about boredom and being misunderstood, The Undertones (who, being from Derry, had legitimate grounds for complaint) addressed instead the far more pressing issues of girls, subbutteo and mars bars in songs of formal perfection and deceptive simplicity. Their sophistication and self-awareness was already apparent in everything from their choice of name, which perfectly suggests pop cheesiness and a hint of menace, to lyrics like their "difficult second album" introduction, More Songs About Chocolate and Girls where they unapologetically state their limitations, in homage perhaps to Talking Heads (whose '77, incidentally, has a similar guitar sound to much of Hypnotised although that's where the similarity ends). . The Very Best of the UndertonesSearch: Rock The Casbah by: The Undertones Release Date October 25, 1994 Someone copied me a C90 tape of this album for my 13th Birthday. On the other side was the Specials first album. Those 2 Albums are for me the quintessential Teenage soundtrack! I loved the Undertones side, which started off with the punchy shorter numbers like 'Teenage Kicks' and 'Here Comes the Summer'. The compilation also spans their later works such as 'Tearproof' and 'The Love Parade" , which are more thoughtful and melodic, and just as good. I still have that old c90 as well as my cd! |

The tunes are so catch that one listen of 'Top Twenty' will have it running though your head for days. The Undertones have a raw sound about them, some of the songs seem almost unfinished or underdeveloped (many of the tracks are under two minutes) but they sound good and in a world of formulated 'perfect' pop its actually quite refreshing. Other tracks to listen out for are the Beatlesesque 'One Way Love', the excellent 'Mars Bars' and the "I swear I've heard this one before from somewhere" 'You've Got My Number (Why Don't You Use It!)'. |
