There was a war on, not yet in the USA, but coming closer. Yet even still, the stars of the accoustic era were turning out songs even faster than today's pop singers. The difference was that these singers tended to stay in the charts for over 20 years. Who can remember Billy Murray or Henry Burr these days or the great vocal bands The American & Peerless quartets? Virtually nobody, yet these recordings remain and a little company called Archeophone Records based in Illinois is dedicated to preserving and releasing these hit songs of the day. This is the latest in their phonographic yearbook series which feature all the hits from one particular year, in this case 1916. Although there were no officially recognised charts as such, the Joel ... Read More:

`When I hear Seamus', writes Liam O'Flynn in his introduction, `I know I am listening to the old pipers, as distinct from a rendering on a woodwind instrument'. There is certainly a world of difference between the full, grainy sound here and the glib effect produced by the typical modern piper. Ennis' playing had a studied, slightly pedantic quality; he had all the technique but apparently saw no need to be flashy, and the proportion of reels is much lower than you would expect today. Ennis seems to have been most taken not with the barnstorming tunes but the ones with plenty of interesting twists, and these are present in abundance. Topping the lot is an epic ten-minute version of `The Fox Chase' - brilliant, though I think I detect an edit ... Read More:

Brilliant album as always performed to the highest standards. Live performances of these songs are second to none and their level of courtesy towards the audience after each show is exemplary. Wishing you as always, continued success with each album you bring out and to the host of other artists you work with.

This is a very enjoyable debut album by American Irish combo Gaelic Storm. Reviews I have read slating the quality of musicianship are absolute balderdash. The band are no "Chieftans" I'll grant you, but then I have heard much worse from so called musical icons. The music is light hearted and fun to listen to. Gaelic Storm are extremely popular in the US and rightly so. Really, I would rate this album as four stars but gave it five to counteract the ridiculously low ratings of two of the other reviewers, who, it appears to me, have some personal axe to grind. You can listen to samples of their later albums on Amazon's US site and make up your own mind. This is GS's debut album and they just get better in future releases. I have played them on ... I love the Pogues but there's a reason most of this stuff was never released. There's a few great tracks on here but I doubt I'll listen to most of it ever again. This is certainly for fans only.
