The concept of this album is good - to collect songs and arias connected to the legendary, short-lived diva Maria Malibran, and the more deluxe the edition of this you get, the more info provided.

Yet the implication that Decca and Bartoli are unique in their exploration of rare opera is most unfair. The independant record company OPERA RARA have been doing this for years, and not just recitals, but whole operas with fabulous singers like Nelly Miricioiu, Renee Fleming, Jennifer Larmore and co. They don't get all the hype and marketing that Bartoli gets. But their recordings (also presented in a "deluxe" way) have rather more artistic integrity and tell us more about Pacini, Bellini etc than Bartoli does.

I am a big fan of Cecila Bartoli, This collection of Maria will just simply melt you. Cecila is certainly gifted and this cd collection is something not to pass up. I can not wait for the next cd and to see her perform live!

This is yet another superb disc from Cecilia Bartoli. Her singing is unbelievable her voice is so pure. I never though anyone could beat Sutherland or Caballe singing the aria Casta Diva from the opera Norma but Cecilia Bartoli has done it. I do highly recommend this CD. I promise you wont be disappointed.

I never though anyone could beat Sutherland or Caballe singing the aria Casta Diva from the opera Norma but Cecilia Bartoli has done it. I do highly recommend this CD. This set really stuns.
Julia Varady is a superb Santuzza, her voice is especially beautiful in this role. Pavarotti gives a first rate account of Turiddu, his big voice can portray the vulgar aspects of the character well. Pavarotti's rendition of "Viva il vino spumeggiante" is a real highlight of this set. The Alfio of Cappuccilli is a strong, unexaggerated potrayal and Carmen Gonzales has lots of charm as Lola.
Both the orchestra and the cast are served well by the excellent stereo. Gavazzeni is a great conductor of Mascagni (as can be heard in his brilliant recording of "L'amico Fritz" with Pavarotti and Freni) and draws nice warmth from the National Philharmonic. All in all a perfect set.
