For me, this just scrapes a fourth star. My main irritation with it is the inclusion of two Nanci standards that really didn't need recording again.
The rest is nice, a bit safe, but nice.
I was intrigued to hear NG's version of the classic Crystal Gayle 'When I dream'. She does a decent job of it, but like all the songs here, doesn't exactly redefine it.
I expect it was the reaction to 'In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning' (recorded previously) that made Nanci do this record. It's on here too, and is probably my favourite, along with 'Please Call Me Baby' and 'Drops From the Faucet'. It's good to hear Nanci singing properly and reminding us what a deep and expressive tone she can adopt when she isn't torturing her own material. ... Read More:

This is a thoroughly enjoyable twisted mess, just as you would want a Tom Waits live album to be. Worth getting if you enjoyed the Swordfishtrombones/Rain Dogs/Franks Wild Years trilogy. It's just a shame there aren't more spoken clips: when he tells the story about the soldier and the pregnant girl, it makes you realise he could pretty much wipe the floor with most stand-up comics.

As one reviewer pointed out, the sound quality isn't great and you may find yourself lungeing for the volume control sometimes.

Asylum Years

I am always impressed by Tom Waits’ descriptive ability – the way he paints vignettes of people and places and moods. His early work on the Asylum label is generally more accessible than later stuff like Bone Machine and here the listener finds Waits in a gentle frame of mind on a tasty selection of mainly soft ballads and jazzy numbers like Blue Valentines and the duet I Never Talk To Strangers. I prefer his country style ballads so Tom Traubert’s Blues (Waltzing Matilda) and Ruby’s Arms are my favourites. This is a good introduction to his bluesy musical vision contained in that gravely voice and his evocative story songs, but I think it would have been better if masterpieces like The Piano’s Been Drinking (Not Me), I ... You might remember, some years ago now, a bizarre Levi's advert with a funeral procession in it and a strange blues track that begins 'Liar Liar, your pants on fire'. That was a Screaming Jay Hawkins cover of the Tom waits track 'Heart Attack and Vine'. An absolutely fantastic white trash blues ramble that pretty much sums up this album.

If 'The Heart of Saturday Night' is the sound of a down-and-out pulling it all together for a late night performance in a jazz club, this is the sound of the morning after. The art work on the cd features Tom Waits' face on a yellowing newspaper and the music sounds like that of someone who has just woken up on a park bench wrapped in this newspaper.
