Search: Saint-Saens - The Swan (from Carnival of the Animals)

Release Date February 18, 2002
Howe Gelb has continued his weirdness with this album. Titled after childrens' classics but done in the style of many well known artists such as Goldfrapp, Black Sabbath & Nick Cave. The Pictures At An Exhibition cover certainly knocks spots off the ELP version and Howe tinkling away at the piano on Moonlight Sonata is inspired!
Buy this album from Amazon and you could be in for a treat (or a disappointment - depending on what you are expecting!)

There are numerous great value compilation sets of classical music claiming to have the power of relaxation - Classic FM alone have a few variants such as `Relax', `Relax More' and `Time to Relax' - and all appear to offer the ultimate relaxing experience so it's a difficult task to decide which to buy.
There is no `best' compilation though for it's a matter of personal choice, but there are several advantages of choosing the Classic FM range of relaxation therapy. There is not too much repetition between each set (if there was, we wouldn't buy their next relax release would we?), the recordings are invariably good (and recent) ones, and most importantly they usually offer a selection of some of today's big names in the Classical ... I adore the violin with its singing and sonorous tones. There is much on this CD that I admire but unfortunately most of it is spoilt by the addition of the anodyne and bland sound of the accompanying harp! Why on earth Joshua Bell chose this is beyond me - OK it's a very personal thing but I think the harp sound completely ruins most of the tracks here.
A lovely 2CD Classic FM compilation of relaxing music - for mothers as much as their babies - consisting of an interesting assortment of baroque, classical, romantic and modern music with the underlying theme of aiming to relax the listener.
Some pieces are chosen partly for their title as well as the soothing effect they have, these include the 'Lullaby' by Brahms and 'The Swan' from 'Carnival of the Animals' by Saint-Saens. The more contemporary offerings are by popular composers such as Patrick Hawes. These are good recordings, as expected by Classic FM, many of which will be comfortably familiar to most of the radio shows listeners.
Comfortably safe by Classic FM maybe, but comfortably relaxing too.
