Had I read the first review before I obtained my copy of this two-CD set I might have been dissuaded from doing so, which would have been my loss. Having played it against my Capitol CD of "Songs For Swingin' Lovers" I'm happy to concede that the sound is not the same, but I would not agree that it seems flat. It's certainly somewhat less brassy, which is no bad thing, given that the original recordings were made to appeal to a new generation of customers, who chose LPs to show off their hi-fi systems. The ambient sound level is about one-third lower, which enables a better degree of volume control, and the acoustic strikes me as warmer and more natural.

My preference is for the "later" Frank Sinatra, whose recordings in the Sixties and Seventies with Reprise demonstrated the full maturity of the acknowledged master of vocal phrasing. So I do not listen to this album of Sinatra hits from the many recordings he did for Capitol in the Fifites as much as I do other works. But this collection only "suffers," if that word can even be applied, in retrospect. Certainly there are moments on these songs, such as in "All the Way" and "Nice 'N' Easy," where it is clear that as good as this guy is, he is going to get way better. Just compare the 1955 recording of "Love and Marriage" on this album with the 1965 version he did with Reprise. Enough said. This album reflects a time when Sinatra still had a big band behind ...
