The debate whether, when learning to play the guitar, you should begin with an acoustic or an electric instrument, is probably as old as the history of the electric guitar itself; regardless which event you associate most strongly with its invention, and which of the enterprising souls who began experimenting with the amplification of the six-string sound way back in the 1930s you most credit therewith. Many find the sound of an electric guitar more impressive than that of an acoustic; and I'll freely admit that few pieces of music make my inner membranes resonate as instinctively as those featuring a really well-played e-guitar solo. Purists, however, argue passionately in favor of the acoustic guitar, and maintain that you're simply not going ... Read More:

8 Frames a second was Ralph McTell's debut album, and although the majority of songs can be obtained on various compilations, this release marks its first release in its entirety on CD. Suffering from an uncertainty of direction, and an inability to argue over the record company's choice of covers to be included, the album does nevertheless contain its fair share of classics. The opening track, Nanna's Song, was Ralph's second ever composition. If he'd never written a third song he could still be justifiably proud of his achievements. (His third song turned out to be Streets of London, which Ralph considered not good enough to include, but was persuaded to record for his next album Spiral Staircase.)
Ralph manages to get through a number ... Read More:

While this release should perhaps not be purchased before you've bought and enjoyed the Blue Horizon double CD reissue of Duster's music(essential stuff), it is a more than worthy companion to it. Indeed, there are several tracks here which I prefer to the Blue Horizon versions. They are 'Worried Mind', Duster's classic 'Jumpin' At Shadows' (which, of course, has been covered by Fleetwood Mac and Gary Moore) and 'Love Me Like You Can', which is entitled 'I Want You To Love Me' on the Blue Horizon set. The versions here were recorded for the legendary John Peel Show. Duster appeared on that show many times. There are also several brilliant cover versions which were never recorded for Blue Horizon such as Frank Frost's 'Ride With Your Daddy Tonight', Ray ... Read More:

I'm really surprised that there hasn't yet been a review of this CD/album.
For anyone old enough to remember Mungo Jerry (and Ray Dorset - who didn't give up his job until "In The Summertime" got to Number 1) - this was classic good time 3 chord rock 'n' roll skiffle and an absolute pleasure to listen to! Very politically incorrect, I mean ... "If her dad is rich, take her out for a meal - if her dad is poor, just do what you feel" very sexist but very much of its time I feel. I loved the B-side "Mighty Man" too, I liked "Lady Rose", "Baby Jump" and doesn't this prove that he did "San Francisco Bay Blues" long before the "Unplugged" Eric Clapton.
All in all, one I can personally recommend, if you like good time music with a sense ... Read More:
