Well this is my 11th JSP set and its really wonderful, possibly the best overall. Rare blues no doubt but also blues of the highest caliber. If your new to early blues I would start with collecting recorded works by the big names of Delta, Piedmont, country and Gospel blues first(Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Charlie Patton, Son House, Tommy Johnson, willie brown, Blind Willie Mctell, Blind Blake, Blind boy fuller, Bukka White, Skip James, Barbecue Bob, Reverand Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt, Furry Lewis, Robert wilkins, Frank Stokes, Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Joe Taggart etc etc!). Once you have digested this material I would start collecting material by lesser known artists on labels such as Document, Yazoo and JSP. This set ... Read More:

These 'Proper' boxsets are extraordinary value, and this one is no exception. Lightnin' recorded a lot - and there are other boxsets around such as the Prestige-Bluesville recordings, which are also excellent. I own both and the difference is that the Proper set is a sort of 'best of' covering a wider period in time - and a lot cheaper.

Summary - a really good collection.

This CD contains the epitomy of the piano blues. In what was to become his last recoding Yancey's apparantly easy style produced some of the clasic piano blues recordings. His rendition of Leroy Carr's 'How long blues' is both haunting and beautiful and yet so simple. The extra bonus is a second version with his wife Estella 'Mama' Yancey singing to Jimmy's accompaniment. He displays his boogie-woogie skills on tracks such as 'Yancey special', Yancey's Bugle Call' and 35th & Dearborn, where he shows the style that influenced followers such as Meade Lux Lewis 'Mama' Yancey's contribution to several of the later tracks leaves one wondering why she has never been included with other female blues greats. As the title indicates, this is the music played in the rougher watering holes of black America in the immediate postwar period, coinciding with the increasingly wide availability of electric guitars. Though these recordings were, presumably, mostly made in premises at least vaguely resembling recording studios, they sound completely live, warts and all. It seems unlikely that many of these artists achieved any fame beyond a fairly small number of these jook joints, or that any of these records sold in significant numbers, and in many cases this is understandable - there is virtually no artist represented in this box set with a tenth of the talent of Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker or Lightnin' Hopkins.
