This movie had a great feel to it - not just the visuals, but some gorgeous music playing in the background.
In fact, much of the music is not so good to listen to on its own because it suffers what I call 'soundtrack syndrome' (gets boring at times, so as not to interfere with the on-screen action).
Eventually, I discovered the one piece of music that made me like this movie more than it really deserves... unfortunately, the piece that really blew me away isn't on the CD (as mentioned in helenearth's review, playing early on when they're sorting the images).
If you like that music, then like me, you've fallen for Schubert's unfinished Syphony No. 8 (first movement).
My advice: buy a Schubert recording, ... Read More:

i like the interpretation of the score on the last track. it reminds me of the bridge scene. the previous mi2 score lent it self to a heavy rock interpretation, which although was different from form, lacked the suspenses, the tension inherent in mission impossible. i think this compliation is close to the soundtrack to the first film.
I am quite surprised at the length of each individual track. Why be long winded when brevity and conciseness makes the point
?

The singing is good, but perhaps a little underpowered & Pinnock's
conducting is stylish & lively. There is an excellent note by Anthony
Hicks,& a synopsis but no text. The great scene in the work is the one
where the writing appears on the wall. Alas, there is an unnecessary
disc change in the middle of it, completely destroying the flow.

It is wonderful to have such a fine recording of this opera in the English language. Even though Janacek's music closely reflects the rhythms of the Czech language, there is an immense gain in immediacy in this curious and utterly gripping drama when hearing it in English. And what a piece! Through his monstrous, desiccated yet sympathetic 300 year old heroine, Janacek conveys most powerfully the futility of life without end.
The tempi here tend to be slower than in Mackerras' earlier recording on Decca, which may be partly to do with getting the English words across in the opera house (this is a live recording), but this approach feels absolutely right.
Cheryl Barker is superb as Emilia Marty, and the other singers are an excellent ... Read More:
