Oh - Dear Oh Deary Dear, Amazon!!
This is, without doubt, one of the very best performances ever of the Serenade, quite apart from all the other quite amazing stuff on offer. It was, after all, Conducted by Ralph Vauaghan Williams himself, whom, it may be assumed, knew exactly what he wanted.
However, I feel it is important to tell the world that, once again, dear old Amazon has got its performer details mixed up, well and truly!!
You really should get your act together, you know dears!
You have John Heddle Nash Junior, - (the Baritone! - and an old friend of mine!!) - singing in the chorus of sixteen at the head of your advertisement. This could get lots of people reaching for their credit cards and passwords ... Read More:

Film music is often viewed poorly by overly snobish music critics. Interestingly Stravisky and other's have long been adopted as ligitimate when producing balet music.

When RVW wrote the music that finally became symphonia antarcics it was written as music for the film of Scott of the Antarctic.

You dont need the film, all you need is this music. I cannot imagine a more stark and terible piece of music. Having been in some of the bleak places of the world, this pice hits the spot!

This is a splendid disc! The Serenade to Music is performed in its original version for soloists which is quite different (better?) than the subsequent choral version. The soloists present a marvellous account and the orchestral textures provide a ravishing counterpoint. Of particular note is the violin solo at the beginning which ably sets the scene for this account.
The Mystical Songs (text by George Herbert) are wonderfully sung by Thomas Allen and yet again are accompanied with great sensitivity and skill. The orchestral texture in Love bade me welcome is particularly fine as is Allen's performance which captures the tentative steps of the narrator into relationship with the Divine with an understated passion.

Not many conductors match Adrian Boult's masterly performances of V-Williams music, for its rich tonal colours, noble poise and eloquence. Definitely a must-buy CD for anyone who loves VW's music!
