Disc one Blues And Rhythm.
That's alright mama,Hound dog,Mystery train And Shake Rattle and Roll, the first three covered by Elvis, and the fourth by by Bill Haley. All these songs were originally written and/or recorded by Black Artists but only made the charts when covered by White artists, and in states like Mississippi in the south album sleeves didnt feature images of the coloured singers because it was more likely to chart if the buyers thought they were White. This first disc RnB,has good songs by the likes of Fats Domino,John lee Hooker, Big mama Thornton,Lloyd price etc plus the best version of shake rattle and roll by Big Joe Turner.Racism was alive and well in the music biz in 50s/60s America.

I cannot describe just how much I have enjoyed this collection, and I highly recommend it.
As a child I spent many happy hours stacking up my parents' late 50s and early 60s singles onto a real record player (not a tarty modern 'turntable'), and for ages I searched for a CD compilation that not only included the tracks I remembered, but also captured the musical spirit of the times.
Although I had not heard of many of the 101 tracks on this album before buying it, I now listen to all of it constantly. I defy anyone to get bored of this, covering as it does a great variety of different musical styles from the mid 50s to the early 60s.
Even Cliff Richard is great!
My children also love dancing and singing along to many of the ... Read More:

This Essential Collection of Rock 'n' Roll somewhat begs the question by the inclusion of such numbers as "The Great Pretender" by The Platters, "In The Still Of The Night" by The Five Satins, "Love Me Tender" by Elvis Presley, and "Goodnite Sweetheart Goodnite" by The Spaniels. I was disappointed also that although both CDs carry 25 tracks, neither exceeds an hour's running time. The brief liner note indicates that the compilation spans the period from early 1951 to the end of 1957, but you'll search in vain for more precise dates. In other words, it's a good buy, but had a little more effort been taken it would have deserved the missing star.

I have always been a big fan of rock'n'roll but found many compilations not to the best selection of tracks with a beat. This is not the case here!
These tracks really rock with the likes of Buddy Holly and Elvis at their best, a really good CD with a good fast rockabilly selection for all that adore this music. The track listing is good with a variety of the best songs from each of the artists in good quality.

Its a great idea to issue a 3 CD set which concentrates on just one year. The results are that much of it is now known of but never really heard as little of this music found its way to the UK-the source of this collection by Castle Sanctuary
1954 was in fact the year of Rock Around the Clock but its not the Haley version here its the original one by a country act called Sonny Dae & the Knights and was in fact a Tin Pan Alley song with a complicated history which was really a copy of Hank Williams' Move it on over-but he never heard it as he passed away the previous year.
A booklet included gives full details of all the artists who include many future stars like the Platters,Ray Charles,Etta James,Charlie Gracie, the Drifters, the Big ... Read More:
