Semele is really Handel's last opera even though it was presented as an oratorio or musical drama. I comes after his last Italian opera Deidamia and after the other English opera/musical drama, Hercules. It is full of rich and subtle orchestration. It has a romantic and galant feeling which is full of freshness and vitality, and this recording does it great justice. It is, I think what Handel would have wanted! Played on modern instruments with great precision and attention to period performance it is joyous and buoyant (Wher' er you walk) etc. as well as containing sadness and melancholy (Semele's death)etc. Almost all the singers in this cast are fantastic, especially Battle, Horn and Ramey, and the chorus.
