This is a well put together chronological offering that shows us the superb talent of Clifford Brown. Most of the material here is available seperately but as with many Japanese projects such as this the recordings have been superbly re-mastered and Kiyoshi Koyama has completed the job well with an excellent booklet that makes this a box-set to treasure. As to the the music there are many fine moments to enjoy that take in the 1954 joint quintet sessions with Max Roach with Harold Land blowing well isupport on tenor sax. The All Stars Jam session with Dinah Washington, the studio session with Sarah Vaughan, and the vocal session with Helen Merrill are fine examples of the jazz vocalist being well supported. Last Year I was at the Isle of Wight Festival and simply lying back in the sunshine enjoying whoever it was palying on stage. After a while i realised the band i was listening to were jamming away at length in the middle of a song in a way that seems lost on most bands these days who harbour an unwillingness to inprovise or detour from an exact live replica of their studio tracks. The band i was watching was 'The Stands' and the song was an elongated version of 'The Way she Does'. Drum Solo's, blues riffs and hammond organ!! I immediatley went and bought the album and was delighted to hear Brydsesque jangly pop all the way through the album along with psychedleic and country influence giving the album a beautifully crafted and diverse appeal.
