Back to some sort of old form. It's growing on me despite earlier resistance. But why the heck does he insist on using that horrible electronic voice treatment vocoder thingy that was used more (in)famously by Cher? I almost threw the CD out of my car window in despair at some stages.

Bob's always going to suffer at my hands because I expect a barnstormer like 'Poison Years' every time, and end up being disappointed. A bit like sleeping with an old flame; you pretend to yourself that you're enjoying it, but end up with tinges of regret.

In saying that, Bob's guitar stuff is always gonna be a million miles higher than anyone else. Even God sometimes puts his pants on back to front.

Well im not going to go on about Bobs credentials - your all here because you know who he is, and what he brings to mine and your music collection...
The new album is, i feel, a bit of a compromise/trial on the content of Bobs more modern works tied in with some of his old loves. Yes there are the ever so catchy guiter riffs, harmonies, long powerfull vocals that get you screaming along in your car (well i do anyways) and some new electronic bits and bobs (pun intended)...but these dont dominate like they did in 'Modulate'. They work into the songs as more of an accompanyment and they work very well i feel. Seems as though two paths are meeting here and seeing how they get on together and its good to see and great to listen to.

Having enjoyed seeing Hummingbird on their recent tour I bought the promo cd. They've got potential to become very popular. The UK's Dixie Chicks? Perhaps, but at the moment closer to the Wailin' Jennies. Amy Wadge comes across with the more forceful voice (like Natalie Maines in the Dixies) but it's the close harmonies with both Edwina Hayes and Cathy Burton that make this collection so good. All three are talented singer/songwriters and have a passion for the music. Here they share their songs - but it could be an example of the sum of the whole being greater than the individual parts.

The title Britten conducts Britten Operas is a bit misleading - all the pieces in this extensive set are choral works. All have been assembled from Decca's catalogue of definitive performances conducted mainly by the composer himself. A few of the works don't appear to be still available as single disks - so if you want a copy, you will have to buy this set. But at the price of just over £2 per CD, who can complain? Highlight of the set for me was the War Requiem. The only downside - and it's a fairly big one - there's a booklet containing track listings and notes about the music but no libretti, unlike the single disc issues of these pieces which had libretti.
