This CD is a good insight into the early days of ELO and the experimentation they started out with. Bizarrely, ELO could almost have been considered 'prog rock'. Same classical pretensions, same extended instrumentals, similar lyrical considerations. The difference with ELO is, of course, when they said classical, they meant it. Most of the instruments on the tracks here were played by Lynne or Wood, skilled multi-instrumentalists both. But violins and cellos were perhaps a stretch, and consequently the strings could be described as a bit scratchy. The mix also has a tendency to be a bit murky and dark and the orchestration isn't anything like the lush and full sound that appears on later work.

It's only five years since Varese put our two four-disc sets of music to celebrate their 25th year in business (though as one of these was strictly limited, very few actually know it even exists, let alone have a copy). Now, to mark their 30th, comes another four disc set, this time made up exclusively of music released only in the past five years.

Unlike the previous sets (and the two-disc "In Session", which focused on their own series of rerecordings), which had a vast array of utterly diverse scores to cherry pick from, this collection is somewhat more limited, as much contemporary scoring tends to be rather "samey". I was a latecomer to the alt-country/nu-country/no depression/whatever label journo-types have attached to a new breed of Americana-Country- the epiphany being an issue of Uncut Magazine from 1998, which came with a handy list of the usual suspects (Uncle Tupelo, Handsome Family) & a brilliant 20-track sampler that featured Lambchop, The Walkabouts, Josh Rouse, Wagon etc. Having loved such records as Exile on Main St, Fables of the Reconstruction, GP/Return of the Grievous Angel, Everclear & 70s Neil Young (typified by Decade), I found a mass of new artists to discover (perhaps someone ought to reissue the Uncut sampler from 1998?).

I'd recomend highly of not buying this CD, unless you intend to use it in a video (so that it isn't protected).
Why not buy the CD? Its a very good CD and film, yes, but the songs are 90% useless without the videos, like Beelzeboss. Beelzeboss is a rock off with Satan, with amazing dancing (in a sarcastic way) so, the video is kind of important for this and many others. I tried listening to Beelzeboss, didn't feel the same. There's not much point in buying it, unless ya gonna use it in a film of somekind. Best option for you is too download the videos off of google-video (this is still staying legal these options), purchasing off of Itunes or various other options you may find (perhaps filming it ya-self).
