This is very loud party rock, nothing really new but that's not the point here. The tempo is fast, the vocals are energetic and high pitched, and the riffs are the size of small planets. This bands weapon of choice for nut-cracking would be a sledgehammer, no doubt. The record doesn't measure up to the energy when the band lashes it out on stage, but still has a hyperactive buzz that will put a dumb smile on your face. If you get the chance, see this band play (and prepare for premature deafness). If you don't, try this single. (...) In 1993 Spice 1 rose from nowhere to rap superstardom with his brilliant album "187 He Wrote", sadly although the rest of his albums have been great, they have failed to achieve the level of commercial success that this album received and his greatest hits album just goes to show what a great artist he is. The album is typical gangster rap with the majority of the tracks being tales about guns, violence, sex, drugs and life in the hood. The beats are ferocious and although they change throughout the album from laid back west coast G- funk to hip hop beats their standard is incredibly high and Spice 1 adds flavour to all of them with his unique vocal technique. Spice 1 is possibly one of the most underated and underground emcees ever, and its albums like this that kept him there throughout the mid 90s. Featuring a whole host of Bay Area producers like Ant Banks and Blackjack, Spices albums are for the hip hop connesiuer. Those who like overground "reality rap" can go and buy a Snoop Dogg record, but if you want real skills and fatalistic lyrics then Spice 1 is the man. Songs such as "Dirty Bay" where Spice raps about the flow of drugs into the bay area are expertly rapped with graphic description accompanied by dirty funky beats and heavy bass.
