Donizetti - La Fille du RégimentSearch: Signe by: Paris National Opera Orchestra Release Date October 07, 2002 It is with a tinge of regret that I have reached my mid 40s without ever knowingly heard any of Donizetti's music. In fact, had you asked me to describe or categorise his music prior to my buying this recording then I would have struggled. And this is rather a pity because this is a most charming and tuneful work. Not only that, but having been a big fan of Offenbach's opera bouffe for many years there are clear similarities in style, which leans more to the Parisienne audience he was writing for rather than being overly Italian. As to this recording then the only drawback I can find is that, being a recording of a live performance there is a little too much background noise. It is a great undertaking, which the Ensemble performes admiringly. The elven songs are beautiful and the Hobbitsong are merry. The ensemble is inspired by irish folk and classical music. It feels like being in Middle-Earth. |
