I remember hearing this new (at the time) type of dance music with its Euphoric riffs and angelic vocals, and thinking "surely dance music will never sound happier than this?". Well, almost ten years on, I think I was right. No subsequent styles of dance music have lifted my spirits to quite the same heights.

Unfortunately (and typically for most dance music styles), over the last decade or so the British charts have been bombarded with an endless stream of sound-alike pop-trance hits, the majority of them so heavily commercialised that they utterly STINK of cheese. Thankfully most of the tracks on this compilation are not like that; they're the real thing. This is the original Euphoric Trance sound.

This latest addition to the Northern Exposure series once again re-emphasises the point that Sasha and John Digweed are two of the best DJ's in the world at this time, both individually brilliant, it's a credit to the music industry that they have yet again come together and assembled one of the finest progressive house/trance albums of recent years. The first CD is undoubtedly the better.. with track two - Space manouvres - Stage One, and track ten Mono Culture - Free standing out in particular. This is one of those albums that makes you (or at least it did for me) search frantically for the artists on the album to see what else they have produced. Classic Euphoria

Acknowledging all the other reviews that reinforce the point of this being a classic revisit of some of the last 10 years' biggest tunes, I really want to outline that Ministry of Sound ownership also represents possibly the biggest thorn in Euphoria's side.

If we take a look at the first Euphoria albums, we can see some real honesty and new ground there. Seldom-heard-of-on-mix-compilations talent like PF Project, Matt Darey, Agnelli&Nelson and Jay Burnett, these guys were given a task to put together an album that said what they wanted to say. The Euphoria album cover would proudly proclaim who had mixed it (and even how - some albums were "digitally mixed" i.e. on a computer rather than by all-hands-on-decks) and each album had ... Trancemaster 4005

Trancemaster compilations come out very quickly, but the most recent ones have been fairly poor. This is probably one of the worst for a long time.

Most of the tracks are boring. The only ones that really stand out are "Sunset Beach", "April" (nice acoustic guitar!), and "The Silence". But the last of those is many years old. 3 good tracks out of 22?

It's about time that the Trancemaster series spent a bit more time selecting the best possible tracks for each compilation. Granted, there is less trance around these days, but it's still out there. I'd much rather see one or two Trancemaster CDs each year with 10-20 good tracks on each (they can't all be brilliant, but they can be better than this). There have been four instalments of ...
