If it makes sense to talk about doing gloom brilliantly then Russian composers do gloom brilliantly. This disc offers us a good hour's worth of fine frowning stuff from Rachmaninov, splendidly performed and in general, I'd say, well recorded. The sound at the start is in the middle distance rather than in the foreground, but turning the volume up a little helps, and even here the effect is perfectly satisfactory if one thinks in terms of how it might sound in the concert hall from a seat towards the back. As the disc progressed I fancied that matters improved in this respect, whether or not my impression was largely a matter of becoming accustomed to the acoustics. If you haven't come across 'The Bells' before, then don't delay. It was of course Rachmaninov's favourite of his own works, and it's certainly a departure from the better known Piano Concertos. The same richness and melodic brilliance is here, but the final movement Lento Lugubre in particular is very, very dark.

This recording is flawless and the release also contains the texts of the works which renders them far more accessible. The only criticism I would make is that Pletnev's interpretation is just slightly too glossy. For the ultimate creaking, terrifying, mysterious sounding version of this work, the Kondrashin archive recording on Melodiya has more atmosphere to it. I ordered this album and thought it was the best christmas album I have ever bought. The songs are all so christmassy and really put you in the christmas mood. It is a great collection of varied artists, so it suits everyone's style of music. Favourites of mine are the beautiful "silver bells", the pretender's version of "merry little christmas" which is delightful, and mariah carey's belting powerful version of "o holy night" that sounds like she has desended from heaven. Buy it and feel 100% christmassy.
