Haydn's 'oratorio' (or whatever) The Seasons received its first performance in 1801, the 70th year of the composer's life. He was at the very height of his creative powers, and his inspiration had received a new jolt, as Beethoven's and Schubert's were later to do, through his exposure to Handel. He was not new to oratorio, indeed his Creation seems to me the only later work of that name that can be mentioned in the same breath as Handel's. He was also not unduly thrilled with the libretto of The Seasons, which comes in English and German versions but which he characterised tersely as 'franzoesischer Quark' (frenchified rubbish). Handel: Belshazzar

The singing is good, but perhaps a little underpowered & Pinnock's
conducting is stylish & lively. There is an excellent note by Anthony
Hicks,& a synopsis but no text. The great scene in the work is the one
where the writing appears on the wall. Alas, there is an unnecessary
disc change in the middle of it, completely destroying the flow.

Lemon Jelly move on but not necessarily quite where you expect... and, for fans of "Lost Horizons" this one needs care. Less quirky than its hugely successful predecessor, "'64 to '95" moves closer to mainstream club music, losing and gaining on the way. Gone is much of the humorous and inherently "uplifting" feel of "Lost Horizons" that made it such an enjoyable mass appeal album, in its place is a harder edge with more drawn out, less "easy-listening" work-outs of its themes. Serious stuff then, but is it any good?

You see the 5 stars, there's no need to talk about enjoying this album though it can't hurt:

Really enjoy this album!

Was reading the LJ reviews, hadn't planned to leave one then realized: no mention of the open-eye visual delights that accompany this funky soundcake. Artistically creative and synchronized with the music, a complete trip awaits ~ 21st Century Psychedelia!
