. Monckton - Songs from the Shows
Search: Sly
from: Hyperion
Release Date March 31, 2008
Lionel Monckton is now largely forgotten, but his Edwardian musical comedies were once popular, especially in the Gaiety Theatre. His songs are playful, quaint and very tuneful. As one might expect from the time they were written, the musical style is somewhere between Gilbert and Sullivan, and later composers such as Kern. This "Songs From The Shows" CD from Hyperion is very good, with fine singing from Catherine Bott and Richard Suart, who are accompanied wonderfully by Ronald Corp and the New London Orchestra.
An alternative CD well worth considering is the excellent The Monckton Album recorded by Theatre Bel-Etage.
