Having heard the hype surrounding Slinky as a club, added to the fact that John '00' Flemming and Ann Savage are residents, I bought the Slinky CD with great expectations. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. While it's a good selection of tunes for those who like progressive house and soft, soft trance, anyone looking for hard beats and big breaks will be sorely disappointed. There aren't any. For a CD that considers itself World Class this is more third division. There's no real innovation with the mixing, tracks all sound a bit like they've been cloned from the other, and none seem to really go anywhere. The second disc is a bit of a scam as well, with three tracks repeated twice with different mixes. If you want something ... Read More:

So, we have "50 tracks - 50 hits". I don't like this new gimmick of having 50 tracks - I'd rather a few not needed songs were shoved off so we could have them all in full. Thankfully, the songs I bought this CD for were intact. And the songs themselves? CD1 starts off with some good quality hits from J-Lo, Five, Dido, Uncle Kracker (although I notice this is a different version!) and Natalie Imbruglia. There are a few too many alt hits, such as New Order and the Super Furry Animals. Some nice songs there though, such as the excellent Miss California from Dante Thomas, Sven Sven Sven and, I have to admit, the Tweenies. CD2 gets a great start with Alicia Keys' massive hit Fallin'. It continues with some great songs from Missy Elliot, Ian ... Read More:

For once a dance compilation that not only has popular songs that are around at the time but damd good ones such as "My Friend", "Castles in the Sky", "American Dream" and "Resurrection" just to name a few but what impressed me the most was seeing very good but not so popular tracks such as Faithless' "Muhammad Ali" and the corouage to include dido's "Hunter" in such a compilation.

Truth is Hed Kandi rarely fail to totally impress. I often get tired of other comps - regardless of how good a reputation they have (Real Ibiza, Cafe Del Mar, Another Late Night, Back to Mine, Ministry) - but Hed Kandi manage quality collections across a good range of genres (Chillout, Nu Cool, Back To Love, Beach House & Disco Kandi). They also manage to avoid the repetition found in the above mentioned collections.
So... if you're having any kind of gathering ... these are CDs you can bung on without a seconds hesitation.
Now Hed Kandi have started a television advertising campaign perhaps we will see more people buying them and (fingers crossed) a drop in price.

Considering myself a connosour of club tracks and progressive trance music scene, I have always searched for the Renaissance label. This new compilation is an excellent addition to an impressive history of mix albums by Renaissance. Having owned the original " Renaissance" back in 1994 by Sasha & John Digweed, I've observed that Renaissance music is always slightly ahead of the scene. Their choices of DJ's and tracks are always cleaner, smoother, and unparalleled by any other commercial mix releases. Certainly much better than the unearthly overcommercialized " Global Underground" series, whose early compilations with Emerson, Digweed, and Sasha and a few others were decent, but then strayed from the truly " Underground" ...
