It won the Gramophone choral award in 1987 but the star of this recording is the sublime and truly heavenly singing of Emma Kirby. The recording is a well balanced whole of exquiste moments. Sutherland's slightly deep toned color (a touch of mezzo-soprano color) and her slight vibrato technique make a wonderful counterpart of the evil queen contrasted to the group of the righteous. The choral singing is sublime, clear, direct and vibrant. This is must have for any ,not only for Handelians.

BUT - and it is a big but - if you are planning to use tracks from this album for your wedding there is a potential for gross confusion because the digital index is for a Maria Callas album. So be warned, and make sure that whoever is in charge of ensuring that the right track is played at the right time has their wits about them.

Normally I don't have much time for classification of music beyond good/bad or interesting/dull but since DGG have chose to promote this as "The Jazz Album" it beomes an issue.

If only they had called it "The Ballad Album" they would have had an unqualified success on their hands. Thomas Quasthoff is well-known and highly regarded in the classical field for his innate musicality and beautiful baritone voice. With subtle and understated singing he adapts effortlessly to songs described as popular but which in many cases are as much works of art as classical songs. It's all but impossible to detect that English isn't his first language and he sounds utterly at home here, especially the slower numbers, but is less successful in up-tempo ... Read More:

A sumptuous box 5 discs which covers pretty much the best of the 2006 tour and forming a pretty good tribute to the late Richard Wright. The main feature discs one and two are CDS of the Gdansk concert with the Baltic Philharmonic concert orchestra. Disc one made up mainly of the `On an island album`, disc two David Gilmours greatest hits with probably the definitive live version of Echo's the seminal Pink Floyd classic. Disc three is the fist of two DVD's this is highlights of the Gdansk concert and a rather good documentary the concert highlights stretch to 100 minutes or so.
