The Best of Evelyn Knight

Search: Smile
by: Evelyn Knight

Release Date March 07, 2001
Arriving at a time when American popular music was taking on folk and country influences Evelyn Knight has been well served with CDs-2 of them which only repeat about 6 songs.
You can hear at times Bonnie Lou-who was a genuine country singer-and a lot of Dinah Shore-who also did a few folk songs.
Buttons & Bows was common to both though its always associated with Dinah Shore.
Dance with a Dolly had just been recorded by Bill Haley & the Saddlemen-who would go onto the Comets and Worldwide fame.
I remember the cornfields-possibly her greatest song-and My Grandfather's Clock-made previously by Frank Crumit.
How could anyone give her less than 5 stars?

The mix of Japanese artists singing English songs leads to some amusing results such as the mispronunciation of words featuring the letters'l' and 'r'. If you've seen the show then you'll recognise the songs but you haven't, you'll be in for a surprise.

Deface the Music

Search: Smile
by: Utopia

Release Date June 25, 2008
Deface the Music is a bizzare album. After the crazy jazz-prog masterpiece 'Todd Rundgren's Utopia' who'd have thought that the band would make a studio album that sounds just like The Beatles? It's not just a passing reseblance either. Rundgren actually revered those Liverpudlian superheroes and set out deliberately to make a beatlesesque album. Weird.
Once you get your head around what it is, you realise it's actually really good - totally throwaway, upbeat feelgood nonsense that for some reason sounds better than the real thing. Rundgren's voice is really suited to pop songs, and his characteristic production brings a warm, delightfully flawed sound to this type of music. I don't really understand why it exists, but I'm glad it does.
