Deface the Music

Search: Smile
by: Todd Rundgren

Release Date March 01, 1993
Deface the Music is a bizzare album. After the crazy jazz-prog masterpiece 'Todd Rundgren's Utopia' who'd have thought that the band would make a studio album that sounds just like The Beatles? It's not just a passing reseblance either. Rundgren actually revered those Liverpudlian superheroes and set out deliberately to make a beatlesesque album. Weird.
Once you get your head around what it is, you realise it's actually really good - totally throwaway, upbeat feelgood nonsense that for some reason sounds better than the real thing. Rundgren's voice is really suited to pop songs, and his characteristic production brings a warm, delightfully flawed sound to this type of music. I don't really understand why it exists, but I'm glad it does.

by: Utopia

Release Date October 20, 2003
This is the first time these shows are available in one set. Before now, they were Japanese only releases and costed a fortune. Now, you get all 4 sets (7 CDs in total) covering Utopia concerts from 1978 to 1984.

The quality of the shows vary. The worst being the "Oops! Wrong Planet Tour" and the best the "Oblivion Tour". They are however all great shows and it's great to have them on one set, especially the "Deface The Music Tour" because most of the songs from that album have never been played since.

The package itself is very basic. The digi-pack cases come in a large slipbox which hold the 4 sets. There are no liner notes on the shows, just the song lists. But if you're a Todd Rundgren / Utopia fan, then this ... Read More:

Release Date January 01, 1996
Before Mr Wagner had the resources to add symphonic lushness to his compositions, it was the strength of the material alone which made Lambchop a band head & shoulders above the other "alt country" genre. Simple arrangements of beautifully crafted songs are this album's strenght. Who will not enjoy "the man who loved beer" ?
If you love songsmithery at its finest and no frills attached, I recommend this album.
