I brought this album originally after listening to Murmur, which got me interested in rem's earlier stuff. the famous Its the end of the world as we know it (and i feel fine) will be immidiately reconisable but as you listen back through the other tracks the overall subtlety and feeling of the band through these times will become apparent. coming from a remote, slightly backward, town myself i found (Don't go back to) Rockville and Can't get there from here really relevent. i can't recommend this album enough, if just to put on at the end of a stressful day.

GLP has one of the most distinctive voices to emerge from 90s American music, and here turns his considerable vocal and instrumental talents to covering 11 less-obvious 80s songs. Every one is a gem, countrified without actually being country. In each case he does exactly what you'd want from a cover - a homage to the original song, while making it his own. A beautiful, haunting album of great depth. If you like his style of music/singing, you certainly won't be disappointed. Unreservedly recommended.

If you came to REM post 'Out Of Time' as I did and then collected all the albums to the present date, it was only natural that you would then investigate their earlier 'IRS' work. If this is the cream of that crop then I'm not impressed. It's weedy, jangly, student-friendly 'alternative' fodder and *very* different to the REM of today. There are many who cite this earlier incarnation as being the best version of the band but I suspect such people are merely looking back on their youth through rose-tinted spectacles. Would they really find this music special if they were exposed to it for the first time in their 40s? I very much doubt it. Well my answer to this is a big YES! Having owned all the newer albums I decided to delve into the older stuff they did and wow am I glad I did. Ok it doesnt quite come up to scratch with New Adventures in Hi-Fi that quirky sound and beautiful shiny finish, but this is where REM first started they sound great and its the sort of music you put in your car stereo and you just sing your heart out. Tracks like the cover King of the Road and of course So Central Rain along with the absolute classic Its the end of the world as we know it and the one I love. Ok so most of the others many will not know by looking but it soon becomes apparent how many REM song you actually know.
