Surely this dismal jam session was the blueprint for Spinal Tap. Its of its time, over-indulgent and plain silly. I just cannot hear any trace of musicianship in it, and it sounds as if it was recorded at Regent Sound.

You rarely, if ever, find an album that pleases everybody, and perhaps because of this you may find reviews of this collection elsewhere saying "this is a weak song" "that's not up to standard" and so on. I prefer to take a slightly different view.
What you actually have here, (and I think Ian Anderson said as much in the sleeve notes), a kind of Jethro Tull "try before you buy" sales brochure introducing you to their back catalogue. The CD spans JT's illustrious career, starting with their single "Living in the Past" and progressing in a fairly non-chronological order through some classic Tull and some less obvious choices.

Like many other bands of the time, Tull rose from the blues movement, (where else with Mick Abrahams on board), but even in those early days it was not Tulls way to just toe the line. While their predecessors (cream etc) were now blazing trails on the psychedelic rock scene, much of the material on this debut album fused blues, rock and jazz to great effect.

This set the pattern for all early Tull releases, always innovative, keeping one step in front of the competition.

The inclusion of 4 instrumentals may be considered a bit excessive by some but think on 2 or 3 years to the likes of Vann der graaf generator and co, who I often thought suffered from terminal laryngitis, and it could equally be argued HOW forward thinking they ... Read More:

I've read the somewhat mixed reviews for this album so bought it with some trepidation. What I was really after was a re-release of the Bumpers compilation which still holds fond memories for me, but that's not available, so I went for this. I'm not disappointed, the album has been playing non stop in our studio since I received it and for me every track rates as good and interesting, some as exceptional. An excellent evocation of late '60's and early '70,s. My only criticism is that along with lots of albums from the period the sound seems a little thin and lacking in the warmth and depth that we've become used to with advancing audio technology. Other than that it's highly recommended for a musical trip back in time.

I just want to say I just recently got Helen Reddy's I Am Woman/Long Hard
Climb & Love Song For Jeffrey/Free & Easy CDs

I have been waiting years for her albums to be re-issued to CD so when I was looking into Amazon for music and
thought well just let me try Helen Reddy and see what thousand of
compilations are on offer and so to my amazement I saw these two CDs and
ordered them right on the spot.

The funny part is when these 4 albums were first released I was between
the ages of 7 to 10 and did not get into her music until I was a teenager.

But after not hearing these songs for over 20 some odd years and after
experiencing life I am listening to these songs in a whole new light.
