What a huge surprise Arch Enemy are! Surely, you'll say, any band with a female vocalist can never REALLY make it as a true metal band... not so!
After hearing their latest album, The Doomsday Machine, i thought i'd check this out too... and man i'm glad i did.
Like the latest album, Wages of Sin is just pure, heavy metal. It's all about the massive riffs and solos. Think very much along the lines of bands like the mighty InFlames or possibly bands like Chimaira & LambOfGod. The Opening 4 or 5 tracks are just sheer brutality. Enemy Within, Burning Angel, Ravenous, absolutely top notch.
The vocals are very 'death' and harsh, but like i said, if you are a fan of InFlames, Chimaira or Trivium etc etc then ... Read More:

For their 4th album Arch Enemy have a major line-up change with original vocalist Johan Liiva making way for new singer Angela Gossow. Any fears that the addition of a female vocalist would lead to Arch Enemy going soft however prove unfounded, as Angela gives full-on death metal screams throughout of such harshness that the changeover isn't that much apparent. Musically this is the same Arch Enemy of old, with their highly melodic death metal collision of the intensity of Carcass and the hooks of Iron Maiden. Inevitably a couple of tracks smack a little of filler, but for the most part the quality control is very high, with some highly infectious metal riffing (not least the `Hanger 18'-style `Burning Angel') and a stunning production. Before you get mad at me, let me say that i'm not dissing this album. I'm saying that it depends on your personal ideals of what Death Metal is and mine are definitly not suited to this.
I originally apporached this with alot of anticipation and excitement (i loved burning bridges). But when i actually heard it something just didn't click. But it had all the formula for melodic death.
Churning guitars? check
Dual harmonies? check
Growling vocals? check
furios double bass drumming? check
I couldn't undertand why i didn't like it. i thought time would help, buyt if anything i got more bored the more times i listened. Then i began to hear that the songs all followed the same formula - thrashy ... Read More:
