Protection was never really gonna compete with its predecessor (Blue Lines) and for most, its a case of, "oh, not another remix album". but they truly are good. When you can still pick out the blistering beats and power packed emotion of the tunes, and still find them nothing short of amazing, you realise Massive have created a legendary album, again!

As with all music its a very strong matter of personal taste, if you like massive attack you won't neccesarily enjoy this. I love it, but it took me a year before I actually enjoyed it and now is one of my most played album. Great for zoning out and getting lost...

Massive Attack's sophomore effort could never be as stunning as Blue Lines, and a slight drop in production and songwriting quality made the comparisons easy. Still, from the first two songs Protection sounds worthy of their debut. The opening title track is pure excellence, with melancholy keyboards, throbbing acid lines, and fragmented beats perfectly complementing the transcendent vocals of Tracey Thorn (an inspired choice to replace the departed Shara Nelson as their muse). Tricky, another soon-to-be-solo performer, makes his breakout on this record, with blunted performances on "Karmacoma," another highlight, as well as "Eurochild." But even though the production is just as intriguing as on Blue Lines, there's a bit lacking ... Read More:
