The first half, a session that combines Tate with trumpeter Emmett Berry - another Basie graduate - and Sidney Bechet's pianist Claude Hopkins, is a middling affair, outstanding only in its mediocrity. No-one seems prepared to grab the tried-and-tested material and make something interesting of it.
