I was lucky enough to obtain a used copy of this recording (by the New York Renaissance Band) recently, and found it quite enchanting. This is a good selection of the most attractive tunes from John Playford's 1651 collection of popular dances. The music is played on period instruments in charming three-part arrangements which carry the listener back to seventeenth-century England. I understand from the sleeve notes that the dances are performed with the correct number of repeats so that the CD can be used to accompany country dancing. However I'm not a dancer; I just like the tunes - and I've never heard them played better. This August 2008 EMI compilation is a long overdue reissue of all the recordings this highly revered English Folk duo made for EMI's Harvest Label in the UK (most of it in the Seventies). As their albums are extraordinary rare and valuable on original vinyl, this remastered and specially priced 2CD overhaul is to be welcomed.
