Sure disc two is good, but disc one should not be overlooked. It also has material from Hunky Dory, as well as songs from the Space Oddity album. They reflect the pre-ziggy stuff and have a more quirky, naive 'English' sound. (They're good for bashing out on an acoustic guitar after a hard day down the salt mines.) I also like the John Peel mumblings and the slightly cringing Tony Blackburn interview. It all makes for a more amateur, bootleg feel to the disc, even though the sound quality is good. In this respect it's interesting to compare it with the 27-06-00 Bowie BBC concert hosted by Jonathon Woss, which also has a cosy unpretentious feel to it.

The first 2 CDs are excellent and show the range and diveristy of Bowie's early 70's material. The Ziggy sessions provide some excellent versions, much more raw power than the originals.
However, the extra live 2000 CD, really is dire. It was probably great to be there, but it just feels bland. Always Crashing in the Same Care is over worked and dull, Mike Garsons constant "jazz" piano is irritating in the extreme, as are the awful backing vocals. I think David needs shaking up a bit, time for a Tin Machine reunion me thinks!

I just can't get my head round record companies offering so many versions of classic albums such as this one...
This version was beautifully re-mastered and although the production sounds thin by today's standards (it was made for LP after all), the clarity and "musicality" over the slightly over warm and clogged sounding original LP [and original CD] shines through. The bonus tracks are great too, especially "John, I'm Only Dancing." Big speakers are all that's needed to restore some body to the sound in my opinion..
I didn't buy all the issues of Bowie's work in the early nineties and think I should before they're unavailable. To be fair, the later mastering probably tidied things up a little more (and there's a surround ... Read More:
