Hans Pfitzner: Von Deutscher SeeleSearch: Stations from: Arte Nova Classics Release Date June 12, 2007 Pfitzner's music has suffered, quite understandably, because of his association with the Nazi regime (although composers who flourished under Stalin don't seem to suffer the same neglect). But this great cantata was composed many years before the rise of the Nazis, and it is nothing like the kind of Nuremberg Rally/Triumph of the Will pompous celebration that its title might suggest. Instead it is a haunting, dream-like work of often delicate poetry, beautifully written for both voices and orchestra. There is nothing quite like it, though perhaps other neglected masterpieces like Zemlinsky's 'Lyric Symphony' or Schreker's opera 'Der Ferne Klang' come closest. Visually, what a fantastic package as a boxed set, The Conet Project is. First listening to the discs covered both my wife and myself with a very unsettling calmness, ( isn't that like jumbo shrimp ?), I suppose due to the intonations and the subject matter that The Conet Project contains. Second, there is this Cage-like quality to all of the discs, as if Cage is still organizing performances,but on a global scale and you have the opportunity to find not so silent voices in the the silence that surrounds all of us.
