My first experience of this type of music was back in the two tone days of Madness, Specials, Beat, Selecter, Bad Manners and Bodysnatchers. At the time I was simply blown away with the sheer energy and passion the music created. There was also a terrific dress code to accompany this new style. Two-Tone was born. Its now a household name for those years, but meekly began as a low budget record label by Jerry Dammers ( keyboard player with The Specials). Many of the songs were in fact covers of earlier "reggae/ska/rocksteady" tunes from the 60s and early 70s.
What this album does magnificently is blend the power and agression of the two tone years with the original recordings of the aerlier years. Every single track on this album ... Read More:

This compilation of classic British ska from the early 80s is a fine introduction to the short-lived but hugely influential 2-Tone label. Exploding from multi-racial inner-cities in late 1979, 2-Tone spawned a new direction in dance music in the post-punk era. The Specials, The Beat, The Selector - loud, fast, angry music, but music you simply had to dance to. The album, like the label, focuses on The Specials. Nine of the 16 tracks are the Specials in their various guises, beginning with Gangsters (1979), and the frenetic "Too Much Too Young" and running through to the post-Terry Hall period a few years later. In the middle lies the classic "Message to You Rudy" featuring the trombone of Rico Rodriguez (a ska star in his own right, and ... Read More:

Released by Chrysalis as a stopgap album whilst Jerry Dammers and the rump of The Special AKA struggled to complete `In the Studio'; `This Are Two Tone' effectively collects the single releases of the seminal label and serves as an early history of glories past.
The story is maintained by the improved chronology of the play list, `Ghost Town' the final Specials number one single is moved until last and some of the over songs are mixed up to ensure no band plays consecutive numbers.
The album opens with the first Two Tone single `Gangsters' by The Specials and moves forward with the b-side of the debut Madness single, `Madness'. The debut singles of The Selecter, The Beat and The Bodysnatchers together with the first ... Read More:
