It has a heavy tinge of folk music to it, and is also filled with the same kind of improvised jazz horn solo's as you'd expect to hear in Prince Buster tracks.

There is much more innocence about this kind of music than later incarnations of reggae. Despite the comparison to Prince Buster this sound is a much more well-rounded and practiced sound. The themes are arguably tamer than Prince Busters this collection is littered with love songs rather than social commentary and slackness.

I was first introduced to Gilbert and Sullivan by my mother who, when I was 13, took me to see D'Oyly Carte perform MIKADO in Plymouth in 1963. From that moment I was hooked. At that time we did not have a record player, but despite this, I was able to remember the majority of the music and lyrics and a good portion of the dialogue and the actual staging.

In 1965 we bought a record player and at the first opportunity I travelled into Exeter. MIKADO was not in stock at the only classical specialist of those days so I parted with three pounds five shillings (£3.25) and bought this recording of IOLANTHE.

Flickering Flame: The Solo Years, Vol. 1

I'm really not sure who this album is geared at. Roger Waters fans might be delighted by the rarities here. Though the title track "Flickering Flame" sounds like Waters emulating Dylan - badly. He has better luck with "Knocking on Heaven's Door." Then there's the demo of "Lost Boys Calling," where Waters makes a poor attempt at a higher octave than his voice can handle for an otherwise good song. There is some work culled from other compilations, including the excellent "Towers of Faith" from When the Wind Blows (though no Folded Flags) and of course from Waters' solo albums.
