This album by the Gary Lucas/Philip Johnson lead band, is chocker with excellent interpretations of Don Van Vliet (aka Captain Beefheart) tunes - perhaps you will consider not that surprising from the title!

The reworking is will have met with Van Vliet's full approval, maintaining the musical essence of the originals (see below), while adding something new. This is also classic Cuneiform Records music, i.e. difficult to pigeonhole: quirky rock with odd time signatures a la Beefheart, jazz ranging from free improv to tight arrangements, even hints of New Orleans funeral procession marches and (maybe, just maybe) the new jazz of New York City's Lounge Lizards. this is GENIUS. I know it seems hard to get into but it's not really. Once you, yes dare i say it, 'get it' then you will listen to hard zappa, varese, meshuggah, like it was abba. but that is to take away from this slice of magnificent music. listen, I'm just sparing you my brothers review which will, like other reviews, indicate this as the best album ever made. For those that have difficulty on these pages, grow up. and if you want to sing along, buy clear spot.

This album gives us a reminder of how powerful all the Beefheart Magic bands were. Recorded at the end of his recording career, the band swing effortlessly from the Good Captain's very first album Safe as Milk (Abba Zaba) to much later stuff. Makes your hair stand on end!! If only he'd got a decent recording contract perhaps he'd be delivering albums to this day! Still, his talent isn't wasted - his paintings are something else

Perhaps not the best introduction but then why not. If you like Don's music and haven't got it yet there's only one thing left to do.....

Left-overs from the Troutmask sessions are still more exciting and adventurous than many artists' entire opus. If you already own Troutmask Replica and believe you understand some of the complex musical interaction, you will find more to fascinate and delight in these alternate versions. There are illuminating insights, complete surprises, odd reflections of other material.... but never ever will Beefheart's muse seem dull or uninspired. The sound quality is about as high as you'd expect, having heard the original double-LP. Tape recorder hiss intrudes every now and again, but never so as to distract or obscure the Magic Band's interpretation of their Gumbo's genius. Beware - not for the uninitiated !!

This is an absolutely splendid release of a huge swathe of essential Beefheartian outpourings, including a couple of tracks that are unavailable anywhere else - Little Scratch and Light Reflected From the Oceands(thats how they spell it on the sleeve) of the Moon. Also, while I am mentioning rare tracks, this album has Hard Workin' Man, a track Beef did with Ry Cooder for the film soundtrack of the same name.

The quality of the remastering is of the finest quality. Kudos to the Rhino team who worked on this one. I had some of the original material on older cds and these versions are significantly better.

The set comes with a great booklet(any prizes for the biggest cd booklet included in a standard 2 cd case????) that neatly guides ... Read More:
