Another of those singers strapped with the "new Bob Dylan", Gordon Lightfoot is a legend in his own country and I, for one, am pleased that after his illness of a couple of years ago, he is still around.

This beauty of a box set starts us off in the mid sixties with him sounding like a cross between Jim Reeves and Pat Boone (his words, taken from the very comprehensive 60 page booklet). You know what, the voice was better than both. The songs were good, too, and the first of the 4 CDs has very simple arrangements and sparse accompaniment. The songs are from his United Artists days and before he joined Warner Brothers. There is nothing I can add to what has been said before.
I will admit that while I listened to radio 2 in the 70's-thanks mum & dad!- before I moved towards Joy Division & The Banshees I listened to your choice of music and I am extremely grateful for it.
"Daylight Katy" and "Sundown" are songs that stick with me now in middle-age as when I was young.
Bob Dylan was an icon for a generation but Mr Lightfoot caught my imagination when I was a nipper-listen to "If You Could Read My Mind" and tell me that Dylan wrote anything better and I would beg to differ....

If you like, say, Glen Campbell, Boz Scaggs (a la 'We're all alone'), perhaps a bit of John Martyn - that sort of thing - possibly with a bit of blue grass guitar mixed with an almost norweigian skiffle type feel, then you will love this, actually even if you don't, you'll love this anyway. from the rolling moments of the first few bars right til the end, coupled with the everso slightly twangy, but heart warming (and very different) vocal, it is a gorgeous adventure into Gordon's world. Gord's Gold includes those songs that you know, but you don't, if you see what I mean - you'll have heard them over and over but never quite placed them (Early Morning Rain, Beautiful and the famous 'If You Could Read My Mind' (the track I particularly bought it for) ... Covering some twenty years of his career, these songs display Gordon Lightfoot's golden voice to great effect. Some of these songs are original, and some were "updated" to Gordon's new sound, which I found pleasing but imagine will irritate some.

As an added bonus, the paperwork with the CD has a short history of Gordon Lightfoot, and his band, complete with black-and-white pictures. Overall, I found this to be a great CD, one well worth including in your collection. I highly recommend it!
