I speak not of the music, since I wrote it myself; but of the technical miracle of recording 28 solo vocal lines plus several kinds of electronic treatment, which is huge, especially since it was made over 20 years ago in 1985. I doubt whether there is another CD like it. I am submitting this comment mainly because my eye was caught by a review which described me as having "given up on modernism" in the 1970's. This is an understandable but mistaken view. My admiration of traditional African music began, certainly, by releasing me from the narrow ghetto which modernism had become; but I soon felt the need to integrate my new-won rhythmic and modal physicality with the musical culture which produced me, ...
