Some years ago, while reviewing a series of compilations of music by the hugely talented Boswell sisters, I pointed out that while they recorded a song titled Rock and roll, that there was no way they could be called the mothers of rock'n'roll as some had suggested. Still, that claim set me wondering if there were any female singers that might be deserving of such a title. Listening to Ella Mae Morse sing songs in a variety of styles, it occurs to me that she has much stronger claims than the vast majority of female singers that were around before 1955; of those that I'm familiar with, only Rose Maddox comes close, although her rocking country music is very different from Ella's music, which is rooted in jazz and blues.

Appearing after the sprawling, unfocused double-album set Ummagumma, Atom Heart may boast more focus, even a concept, yet that doesn't mean it's more accessible. If anything, this is the most impenetrable album they released while on Harvest, which also makes it one of the most interesting of the era. Still, it may be an acquired taste even for fans, especially since it kicks off with a side-long, 23-minute extended orchestral piece that may not seem to head anywhere, but is often intriguing, more in what it suggests than what it achieves. Then, on the second side, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, and Rick Wright have a song a piece, winding up with the group composition "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" wrapping it up. Of these, Waters begins ... Read More:

This is one of my favourite Pink Floyd albums, still sounding as good as it did in the long summer of 1970 when it was released. It captures the positive and experimental aspects of the sixties Floyd before they found fame and fortune with Dark Side Of The Moon and became increasingly gloomy and angst driven. The first track is their longest single suite with added brass, cello and choir orchestrated by Ron Geesin. This is followed by three songs, 'If' is an acoustic number by Waters,'Summer 68' is a funky tune by Wright and 'Fat Old Sun' has a great guitar solo at the end by Gilmour. The album finishes with a long soundscape full of Floydian sound effects in 'Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast' which makes for ideal listening on headphones with cereals ... Read More:

fantastic album but only 4 stars due to a lack of a couple of essential stranglers songs, eg. waltzin black, bear cage and i'd liked to have had a few more songs from their masterpiece, "the raven" included.
still a really cool compilation though from a very underrated piece of british musical history. some of the organ solo's will make your head spin, and i have seen it make people nauseous and lunge for the stereo to turn it off, so beware!
you might want to get "the collection 77-88" instead and give the later stuff a miss. it's just a bit tame compared to the older stuff.

For the group's tenth studio album, they decided to title their album `10'. Love the cover, but I agree with Hugh Cornwell that by now the group had seemed to have run out of steam. Where is the politically-correct bite? Where is the politically-incorrect bite? What happened to the cynicism of the system? Instead, most of the songs possess bland safe lyrics that any other bland safe pop group would be proud to possess. This is such a disappointment after the wonderful `Dreamtime' album.
The only songs of note are "Sweet Smell Of Success" with its wicked congas and solo trumpet, the echo-rocker "96 Tears" and the harder-edged "Out Of My Mind". The track "In This Place" has a haunted hippy feel, as if it formed part of a concept album: `ghosts we thought ... Read More:
