Not only is Wrecking Ball a milestone in the career of Emmylou Harris, it is also a jewel in the crown of producer Daniel Lanois who himself has released masterpieces like Acadie and For the Beauty of Wynona, and has written two of these timeless songs.

This is of those albums you return to again and again. People of many musical tastes including rock, country, folk, pop and easy listening will all find something to enjoy. I love Daniel Lanois' production which lends a haunting, wistful quality to Emmylou's voice and infuses the sound with atmospherics.

Buy this album if only for one track: Sweet Old World. About losing a loved one, presumably to suicide, but not necessarily limited to that, it is almost too sad for words. Its ability to capture musically the ethereal, confused, and single-minded detachment from the world we can feel shortly after losing someone dearest is a mark of great musicianship.

But where it is so utterly successful is in realising a lyrical ambition of not expecting the listener to indulge the singer, to share their burden of grief, to help them through the night as it were, which is so often the object of even a great ballad. Instead she simply draws you in gently, unassumingly, until you realise your very own experiences of profound loss could be - are - being described.

The well known (Eva Cassidy, Jackson Browne, Joan Baez) with some lesser known gems (Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Harry Chapin and John Prine)It has trcks that move you (Levi Stubbs Tears by the excellent Billy Bragg) and those which lift the soul (Stones in the road by the underrated Mary Chapin Carpenter)

Truly something for everybody to enjoy and highly recommended
