There are quite a few songs here that are a bit too "mainstream" for want of a better word and dont have that exciting sound that Jansch produces at his best.

Having said that, there are plenty of songs that do and the album is worth having for "The Blacksmith" and "Chambertin" alone.

This is the CD that really brought the poetry and power of Bert Jansch home to me. I had a number old vinyl Bert Jansch LP's (remember those!) but they were clouded with strings and other musicians that, for me and at the time, distracted from the musicianship of the the songwriter. Although "Live @ the 12 bar" was recorded in a small and smokey club in London's Denmark Street it suggests lightness and space, and exudes a freshness and vitality. Bert's live version of Jackson C Frank's " Blues runs the game" is one of the high spots of the session, a superbly delicate yet compeling performance of another songwriter's material. I'm not sure if Bert himself had a hand in the choosing of the tracks, but they could have given it some more thought. Overall the quality of Bert's songs and instrumentals is good-above average, often excellent but sporadically poor (Texas Cowboy Blues, some of the material on Santa Barbara Honeymoon, Leather Laundrette...). Sadly, some tracks of the latter standard found their way on here, which is a shame, because despite popular consensus he produced some really marvellous stuff, albeit not consistently, right through the mid and latter part of his career (ie; after the classic run of albums ending with LA Turnaround.) A compilation from a few years back called 'The Gardener' was the best one ever released, but only dealt with the first part ... Read More:
