Any devotee will know why this compilation gets the 5 star treatment. For the uninitiated there is ample proof of why the band has a cult following and why they are vastly underrated by the mainstream critical elite.
This compilation charts their early works through until the end of the 80's - but it does not include their latter albums ,which mark a return to a heavier guitar driven sound.
As with any - yes any , Rush offering the music is off the highest integrity. The drum ,bass and guitar combos of Peart , Lee and Lifeson ( apart from disc 1 tracks 1 & 2 ) combine with their own songwriting skills to bring an edgy , unique and ultimately rewarding collection of both classic and progressive rock.

If you are after a collection of the more 'radio friendly' tracks that this consistent trio put out during their early to middle period you can't do better than this and at what a price (less than £3 at time of writing). If you are after a little more, a collection that has all of these tracks plus excellent 'album tracks' as well, go for 'GOLD' a 2cd set which gathers together the truly best from the same period.

These guys must have had a tough row to hoe with this project. But it was well worth the effort. Bear in mind though a few songs such as "Limelight", & "Bastille Day" were taken a bit too far, and lost some of their original feeling in the process. On the flip side though, songs such as "Subdivisions" ,"Tom Sawyer","Different Strings",& "2112 Overture" actually gained ground with me with their new approachs and (dare I say it?)improvments on the old scores. This is one tribute album to both enjoy ,and gain some insight into Rock's most insightful band ever. Hat's off to the musicians that made this one possible.

It's hard to keep track of the number of live albums that Rush have released. This was the first, and came between the early heavier rush and the more synthesizer influenced middle part of their career.
The most noticeable thing about this album is that Geddy Lee plays bass and...nothing else! This is a guitar/bass/drums set up that shows them at their hard-rocking best. The only issue I have with it is that the sound quality isn't too great, and in particular the bass guitar is very low in the mix.
The songs are some of the best from their early career (spanning 4 studio albums), and there are great versions of the tracks from 'Rush' here, including a great version of 'Working Man'. They seem to have concentrated on reproducing ... Read More:

I have followed Rush since 1978 and although I still buy their albums today, their early work is still the best. This is an ok compilation of early work but for me has a few glaring omissions. Nothing from the third album "Caress of Steel" where "Bastille Day" is a must and "Anthem" should have replaced "Fly By Night". Either of the above could have replaced "Force Ten" that is always included on their complitations and is by far the weakest track here. Only one track each from "A Farewell to Kings" and "Hemispheres" though I suppose the extended length of many of the other tracks on these albums could explain this. But we get three tracks from "Moving Pictures". Anyway enough of the complaining. Rush in the seventies and eighties ... Read More:
